Ahnentafel Chart of ALEY GUFFEY

To read this type of ancestral chart, double the number of the person to find that person's father. For example, #3's father is #6, whose father is #12, whose father is #24, and so on up the line of generations. As I hit an end-of-line (dead-end) those ahnentafel numbers will drop out, although the other parents' numbers continue on. When I find more information eventually (hopefully!), I will plug the new names into the page into the correct place, with their ahnentafel numbers now visible.

First Generation 1. Aley GUFFEY was born 17 August 1846 in Tennessee. She died 4 March 1882 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Otego Township, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Fayette County shows "Allie, 22, female, born Tenn" MARRIAGE: Fayette Facts Vol. 17 No. 2 pages 15-20. DEATH: Fayette Facts Vol 6 No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "PRUETT Aley 1847-1882. Note the different birth year from other records. Abstract of estate Box 228 Pack 2 (Ale Pruett) died Wilberton township on 4 March 1882. Leaving three minor children Dora Isabell, David, and Rolly. Estate advertised in Fayette Democrat. Mother, sisters & brothers bought from the estate. [Also a Wilson Hudson, possibly a relative through Aley's mother Abigail Hudson?] Aley married David Elisha PRUETT, son of Charles J. PRUETT and Susan Ann NICHOLS on 22 October 1871 in Fayette County, Illinois. David was born 1848 in Illinois. He died 6 February 1875 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois.

Second Generation going up 2. Uriah GUFFEY was born 19 November 1809 in Tennessee. He died 26 April 1897 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 28 April 1897 in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. Uriah married Abigail HUDSON in 1839 in Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Wilberton township. OBITUARY & wife's obituary in Vandalia Leader-Union. TOMBSTONE: Fayette Facts Vol. 6, No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "GUFFEY Uriah November 19 1809-April 26 1897" The Veterans Administration adds this information "GUFFEY Uriah Black Hawk Capt.; Capt. Boyer 2 Ill Reg died 26 December 1897" Note the different death month. WILL, probate & administrator's report. NOTES: He emigrated to Fayette County in 1847. Great-granddaughter Cora PRUETT wrote out a family record in 1982, stating that he was one-quarter Cherokee Indian and fought in the Revolutionary War (she meant the Black Hawk War) drawing a pension. The 1900 Census of Fayette County Illinois shows Uriah's son William R. GUFFEY. It lists Williams' father having been born in Kentucky; right below it lists Fred Guffey (Williams' brother) listing HIS father having been born in Tennessee. Tennessee may have been made from that part of Kentucky when it became a state. Check out Roane County. Other sources state both his parents were from North Carolina. One source says Uriah was listed as Urich, parents Henry and Lydia Guffey. This needs to be checked out. Source says Urich fought in Florida (also known as Seminole) War. 3. Abigail HUDSON was born 20 May 1821 in Tennessee. She died 12 April 1911 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES:1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois gives birthdate as May 1820 not 1821. It states both her parents were born in Virginia, that she could not read or write but could speak English. She was running her farm with her two bachelor sons, William R and Fred. It was free of mortgage, and 7 of her eleven children were still alive. FAYETTE FACTS Vol 6. No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "GUFFEY Abigale wife U. b___20, 1821" FAYETTE FACTS XV No. 1 page 22 "Confidence News" states that Granny Guffey was very ill with cancer of the face, Vandalia Union dated March 2 1911. Also obituary from Vandalia newspaper and a family record written in 1982 by her great grand-daughter Cora PRUETT. It states that she was one-half Cherokee Indian. NOTES: Other sources say she died 7 April. Others record her father being from South Carolina and her mother from Alabama. Obituary of April 20 1911 states she had 44 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren at that time. POEM from children at funeral time. IN MEMORY OF MRS. To read this genealogical register of descendants, look at this example: + 10 M ix. Berrey Guffey was born 27 February 1860 and died 9 November 1935. The plus sign (+) means he has descendants, so you will find him and his own family of children later too, with even more info about him listed there, just look for the 10 again later in the list. Then you see his own "ID number (10)" then whether or not he is "male (M) or female (F)" and then the Roman numeral means "which number child he is, within his siblings." Marion did then and there in the presence of each other and in the presence of said Uriah Guffy did sign said will as attesting witnesses and that affiant believes that said testator Uriah Guffy was then of a sound mind and memory of lawful age and under no constraint when he so executed said Will but your affiant states that at the time the said Uriah Guffy so executed said will it consisted of one folio of legal cap paper and was not cut into as it now is or in other words since the said execution said folio has been cut into and a paper in a different hand writing inserted therein which was no part of the will at the time the same was executed and attested as aforesaid. Affiant further says that she was present at the time said Uriah Guffy executed said will by making his mark thereto, and that she heard him acknowledge the same to be his will and saw him execute the same and saw the said James M. Affiant however says that said will when so executed was not cut apart and the separate paper pinned thereto, but states the facts to be that the said Uriah Guffy sometime near five years ago came to her husband James M. Marion and desired to have the will cut apart at the point where it is so cut apart, and directed the writing in the separate piece of paper to be written and when so written to be pinned in as it now appears, and also directed the interlined words in parenthesis near the end of said will to be thereto interlined. D. 1899. He charge himself with the following, to-wit: Items of Receipts $417.20 CONTRA He ask to be credited with the following payments to the Creditors of the deceased, as per vouchers herewith submitted. Items Paid Out $417.20 That as to special bequests to certain of the heirs which under the construed of said will by the Circuit Court was to be paid out of a certain fund to if realized upon due and owing from one Ailsey Pruett, a daughter of deceased who has been dead about 15 years. The claim although not underlined was for money paid by the deceased to lift a mortgage or indebtedness upon a small tract of land owned by Ailsey Pruett, (this is Aley, not Alsa) The undersigned had no evidence or indebtedness against her or her said Estate which at all times has been insolved-- Hence there is nothing for the Distributes in said will from this Source. The Guns guns given to John Guffey and Berry Guffey or left in possession of widow--to do as she please with----- The undersigned would further show that there is $247.85 due the widow on her award, but as to this she releases the same to the estate, and accepts what she has already taken in full of her claim. A Mr. James A. Manion was a Justice of the Peace in 1869, he signed a mortgage paper for Uriah Guffy. He possibly is the same James A. Marion that witnessed Uriah's will, perhaps a mis-interpretation of the spelling by the original typist.] Uriah Guffy's Obituary, Vandalia Union Newspaper 1897 Uriah Guffy died at his residence in Wilberton township, April 26, aged 88 years. Mr. Guffy was a native of Tennessee, from where he emigrated to Fayette County, Ill., in 1847 and settled within a mile of where he died. He was the father of ten children, five sons and five daughters, seven of whom survive. Three daughters preceeded him to the other shore. Deceased leaves an aged widow over eighty years. The funeral took place Wednesday, and the remains were laid to rest in the Nichols graveyard in Otego township amid a large concourse of friends, Rev. W.B. Nichols officiating. NOTES: He emigrated to Fayette County in 1847. Early Settler Goes to Rest      Death of Mrs. Abigail Guffey, One of The Earliest Settlers of Wilberton Township On Wednesday evening, April 12th, Mrs. Abagail Guffey, after an illness extending over a period of three or four months, died at her home in Wilberton township at the age of about 95 years. Abagail Hudson was born in Tennessee and there married Uriah Guffey in 1839. They moved to this state in 1845 and settled in Wilberton township within a quarter of a mile of the place where she died. Her husband died in 1897. Mr. Guffey was a soldier and served in the Indian War of 1832, and at the time of his death was drawing a pension for his service in that war. After his death Mrs. Guffey drew a pension as his widow and was probably the oldest pensioner in the county. In 1860 she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, an organization holding services in the old Oglesby school house at Arm Prairie, and during all her long life was a faithful member of the church of her choice. Up to about three years ago she was in good health and was remarkably vigorous for one of her age. Then her health began to fail and for the past year she was confined to her house. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Guffey, five sons still surviving, William R., Fred, Noah, Berry and John; and six daughters, Mrs. A. Pruett, Mrs. James Williams, Mrs. Lyman Albright, and an infant babe [all] having preceded her to the other world; and Mrs. Richard Gatewood, and Mrs. Archibald Oglesby, who still survive. She is also survived by 44 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. She was a sturdy woman and was an able assistant to her husband in overcoming the hardships that fell to the lot of all the early settlers. More than that, she was a true southern woman and carried her ideals ----(into?) her home life. She lived a true christian life and did much to help her neighbors and friends whenever and wherever she could, and she will be greatly missed by her children, her neighbors and her friends. Note from area news column: Granny Guffey passed away last Wednesday evening. She had suffered for some time from a cancer. Loving hands did all they could for her but her spirit took its flight. Uriah and Abigail had the following children: 2 M i. William R. Guffey was born 22 March 1842 in Tennessee. He died 14 May 1912. SOURCE: 1900 Census of Fayette County Illinois shows William R. Guffy living with his mother Abagail and younger brother Fred. He was a bachelor. He lists his father as being born in Kentucky, (the other siblings listed  him being born in Tennessee). He could read, write and speak English; owned a farm. + 3 F ii. Elsie or Alsa Guffey was born 3 February 1844 and died 26 May 1928. + 4 F iii. Aley Guffey was born 17 August 1846 and died 4 March 1882. + 5 F iv. Rachel Guffey was born 1 October 1849 and died 16 April 1882. + 6 M v. Frederick Guffey was born 27 January 1852 and died 16 August 1915. 7 F vi. infant Guffey. SOURCE: Abagail Hudson Guffey's obituary states that an infant babe preceded her to the other world. No name or date is given. I assume the birth took place in the 1850's as there is a gap in her other children's births. The obituary places this information between the names of surviving daughters, Mrs. Albright and Mrs. Gatewood. The sons are listed all together first. This child is NOT  shown on the 1870 Census. Needs further checking. + 8 M vii. Noah Guffey was born 3 July 1855 and died 2 March 1944. + 9 F viii. Mahala Caroline Guffey was born 23 February 1858 and died 1916. + 10 M ix. Berrey Guffey was born 27 February 1860 and died 9 November 1935. + 11 F x. Lydia A. Guffey was born 5 October 1862 and died 4 November 1896. + 12 M xi. John Andrew Guffy was born 19 November 1864 and died 25 October 1960.

Third Generation and their children, going downwards 18. Dora Isabell "Ida" Pruett was born 2 September 1872 in Lone Grove township, Fayette County, Illinois. She died 16 January 1953 in Centralia, Marion County, Illinois and was buried 18 January 1953 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township Vol. 86, sheet 10, line 35 shows "Dora I. Whitehead, born September 1872, age 27, married 9 years, 3 of 3 children born are alive, born Ill, father born Ill, mother born Tenn" Obituary from Vandalia Leader or Union. Dora married (1) James Wayne Whitehead, son of Henry K. Whitehead and Minerva Ellen Wyatt on 18 January 1891 in Fayette County, Illinois. James was born 14 June 1868 in Logan County, Illinois. He died 25 January 1938 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214 family #137 shows "Whitehead, James, 2, male, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township page 12 shows "Whitehead James, 12, step-son, born Ill, father born Ill, mother born Eng." Marriage License from Illinois Fayette County Marriages 1878-1897 Vol 2 page 383, married in Wheatland township by J.S. Pippin, J of P, witnessed by John Conrad and T. C. Pippin. 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township. Vol. 86 sheet 10 line 35 shows "Whitehead James W., born June 1867, age 32, married 9 years, born Ill, father born Ohio, mother born Ohio" Note the different year of birth, & birthplaces of parents. Obituary from Vandalia Union Feb. 3 1938. NOTES: Obituary states father died two months before his birth; he came to Fayette County with his mother and family at age 11. He witnessed the marriage of Richard Gatewood's & Elsie Guffey's son Charles. His wife Dora was the cousin of Charles. Vandalia Union, Confidence news states in January 18, 1912 edition "James Whitehead spent Sunday with Amos Ballard". February 1, 1912 edition says he "threshed his cowpeas on Sunday". (That would be shocking in that time.) James and Dora had the following children: + 61 F i. Elta May Whitehead was born 9 October 1892 and died 14 April 1956. + 62 M ii. Laren Norvel Whitehead was born 6 July 1894 and died 25 July 1983. + 63 M iii. Orville Grant Whitehead was born 19 August 1898 and died 15 February 1947. + 64 M iv. Bert Ralph Whitehead was born 29 March 1901 and died 22 February 1989. 20. Rollin Rollen Pruett was born in February 1881 in Illinois. He died 19 May 1960 in the Alton State Hospital, Alton, Madison County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: Fayette Facts Vol. 6 No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "Pruett Rollin Rollen 1881-1960" NOTES: 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois shows him living with his grandmother Abagail Guffey as a farm laborer since his mother had died. It states that he can read, write and speak English. The woman he married is shown as a servant in that home, Letitia Burnett. It is not known who his father was.   Rollin married (1) Letitia Lee Burnett on 10 April 1902. Letitia was born 3 August 1878 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois. She died 1 October 1917 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: Fayette Facts Vol. 6, No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "Pruett Letitia Lee 1878-1917" Obituary in the Vandalia Union Oct 25, 1917 edition NOTES: In the 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, it shows that she is a servant in the house- hold of Abagail Guffey, that she can read, write and speak English; that she does not know where her parents were born. She died 14 April 1956 in Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. States that she was teaching in the Loogootee school. NOTES: She adopted her brother's little girl Orva Lee, when he divorced and Elta proved the baby wasn't properly cared for. Elta married (1) Bert R. Smith on 19 January 1918 in Lutheran Church, Loogootee, Fayette County, Illinois. Bert was born 23 October. SOURCE: Birthdate from an article in Vandalia Newspaper dated Thursday Oct 16, 1924, stating his wife's birthday was on Oct 9th, and his was two weeks later. NOTES: Orville had four marriages. I don't know them all, only the first. Orville married (1) Rowena Thoman. They had the following children: 115 F i. Orva Lee Whitehead. (Later she was Orva Smith, see his sister's info) 64. Bert Ralph Whitehead was born 29 March 1901 in Fayette County, Illinois. He died 22 February 1989 in Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 25 February 1989 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near St. Peter, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: Wedding Announcement. Married in Bert Smith's home in Loogootee, Ill by Rev. Neisler. Obituary from Vandalia Leader-Union, February 23rd 1989. He died in the Fayette County Hospital. Funeral card.NOTES: He was an oil man & farmer, grew nursery stock. Graduated from St. Elmo High School, class of 1920. Taught in Fayette County Schools, including the Old Loogootee School in the 1920's. Attended Sparks Business College? Died of prostate cancer. Bert married (1) Beulah Scott, daughter of Erasmus Clarence "Clair" Scott and Emma Elzora Lofland on 22 August 1925 in his uncle Bert Smith's home, Loogootee, Fayette County, Illinois. The marriage ended in divorce. Beulah was born 26 December 1907 in rural east Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois. NOTES: When her mother died, she was six years old and she remembers a neighbor woman taking her behind the barn and cutting her hair all short, thinking the father would be unable to take care of a little girl's curls. 65. Cora Pruett was born 21 September 1903. She died in the Lutheran Care Center, Altamont, Illinois in late May or early June 1996, and was buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near St. Peter, Illinois.
