To read this type of ancestral chart, double the number of the person to find that person's father.
For example, #3's father is #6, whose father is #12, whose father is #24, and so on up the line of generations.
As I hit an end-of-line (dead-end) those ahnentafel numbers will drop out, although the other parents' numbers continue on. When I find more information eventually (hopefully!), I will plug the new names into the page into the correct place, with their ahnentafel numbers now visible.

1. Bert Ralph WHITEHEAD was born 29 March 1901 in Fayette County, Illinois. He died 22 February 1989 in Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 25 February 1989 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, rural St. Peter, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: Wedding Announcement. Married in Bert Smith's home in Loogootee, Ill by Rev. Neisler. Obituary from Vandalia Leader-Union, February 23rd 1989. He died in the Fayette County Hospital. Funeral card. NOTES: Oil man & farmer, grew nursery stock. Graduated from St. Elmo High School, class of 1920. Taught in Fayette County Schools, including the Old Loogootee School in the 1920's. Attended Sparks Business College? Died of cancer.

Bert married Beulah SCOTT, daughter of Erasmus Clarence "Clair" SCOTT and Emma Elzora LOFLAND on 22 August 1925 in his brother-in-law Bert Smith's home, Loogootee, Fayette County, Illinois. The marriage ended in divorce. Beulah was born 26 December 1907 in Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois.

2. James Wayne WHITEHEAD was born 14 June 1868 in Logan County, Illinois. He died 25 January 1938 in Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 27 January 1938 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. James married Dora Isabell "Ida" PRUETT on 18 January 1891 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214 family #137 shows "WHITEHEAD, James, 2, male, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township page 12 shows "WHITEHEAD James, 12, step-son, born Ill, father born Ill, mother born Eng." 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township. Vol. 86 sheet 10 line 35 shows "WHITEHEAD James W., born June 1867, age 32, married 9 years, born Ill, father born Ohio, mother born Ohio" Note the different year of birth, & birthplaces of parents. OBITUARY from Vandalia Union Feb. 3 1938. MARRIAGE: Marriage License from Illinois Fayette County Marriages 1878-1897 Vol 2 page 383, married in Wheatland township by J.S. PIPPIN, J of P, witnessed by John CONRAD and T. C. PIPPIN. NOTES: Obituary states father died two months before his birth; he came to Fayette County with his mother and family at age 11. He witnessed the marriage of Richard Gatewood's & Elsie Guffey's son Charles. His wife Dora was the cousin of Charles. Vandalia Union, Confidence news states in Jan 18, 1912 edition "James Whitehead spent Sunday with Amos Ballard". Feb 1 1912 edition says he "threshed his cowpeas on Sunday".

3. Dora Isabell "Ida" PRUETT was born 2 September 1872 in Lone Grove township, Fayette County, Illinois. She died 16 January 1953 in Centralia, Marion County, Illinois and was buried 18 January 1953 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Lone Grove township Vol. 86, sheet 10, line 35 shows "Dora I. WHITEHEAD, born September 1872, age 27, married 9 years, 3 of 3 children born are alive, born Ill, father born Ill, mother born Tenn" OBITUARY from Vandalia Leader or Union.

Third Generation going up

4. Henry K. WHITEHEAD was born in Ohio or Illinois. He died between 1867 and 1869 and was buried in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. Henry married Minerva Ellen WYATT about 1851. SOURCE: 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois shows his son James WHITEHEAD, listing his father as having been born in Ohio. NOTES: Death date from 1870 Census of Logan County Illinois (Oran township) showing his wife and kids (youngest age 2) living with her new husband and having a baby (with that man's last name) age 2 months.

5. Minerva Ellen WYATT was born 6 August 1836 in Ohio or England. She died 18 January 1888 in Illinois and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214, family #137 shows "Minerva, age 36, female, keeping house, born Ill, parents not of foreign birth" 1880 Census of Fayette County Lone Grove page 12 shows Minerva E., 44 born Ill" Other sources list birthplace as England. 1900 Census of Fayette County lists her son James. He states his mother's birthplace is Ohio. NAME: from daughters Malissa and Sarah Alice's wedding licenses. Spelled different ways. TOMBSTONE says "Minerva wife of J. C. Thompson died Jan 18, 1888 aged 54 years 5 months, 12 days" NOTES: This woman is buried next to Mary Bunkhard, listed as her first child in some censuses. A stone nearby is for Myrtle Helen WHITEHEAD. Joe Thompson of Port Townsend, WA has a birthdate of about 4 Oct 1833.

6. David Elisha PRUETT was born 1848 in Illinois. He died 6 February 1875 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. David married Aley GUFFEY on 22 October 1871 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Fayette County Illinois shows him working in the William REED home as a farm hand. "PRUETT, Elisha 21, male, farm hand, born Ill" Mentioned in his father's estate as Elisha David, age 16 (in 1866). Fayette Facts Vol 17 No. 2 pages 15-20. MARRIAGE: Fayette Facts Vol. 12 No. 4 page 5 shows "David E. PRUETT and Mahala GUFFEY, both of age, married October 20 11871 by James A BEAL, JP" Mahala was Aley's sister, BEAL was brother in law, a mistake was apparently made at the time. Mahala was only 13 then, & the bride is listed as being of age. James BEAL was married to Alsie GUFFEY. DEATH & burial: Fayette Facts Vol. 6, No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "PRUETT David E. 1848-1875"

7. Aley GUFFEY was born 17 August 1846 in Tennessee. She died 4 March 1882 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Otego Township, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Fayette County shows "Allie, 22, female, born Tenn" MARRIAGE: Fayette Facts Vol. 17 No. 2 pages 15-20. DEATH: Fayette Facts Vol 6 No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "PRUETT Aley 1847-1882. Note the different birth year from other records. Abstract of estate Box 228 Pack 2 (Ale Pruett) died Wilberton tnsp. on 4 March 1882. Leaving three minor children Dora Isabell, David, and Rolly. Estate advertised in Fayette Democrat. Fourth Generation going up

12. Charles J. PRUETT was born about 1816 in Tennessee. He died 10 August 1866 in Fayette County, Illinois. Charles married Susan Ann NICHOLS on 25 May 1845 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1850 Census of Fayette County, Illinois shows "PRUIT, Charles, age 21 with _uanna age 25" and family. 1st MARRIAGE: Fayette County Marriages 1821-1877 shows year 1848. Should be 45. Fayette County Estates Box 163 Pack 9 Charles PRUETT. Family & ancestors from Fayette Facts, XVII No.2, pages 15-20.

13. Susan Ann NICHOLS was born about 1824; She was of Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: See husbands' notes. Possible father is W. B. Nichols who bought at her husband's estate in 1866. This needs to be checked.

14. Uriah GUFFEY was born 19 November 1809 in Tennessee. He died 26 April 1897 in Wilberton township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 28 April 1897 in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. Uriah married Abigail HUDSON on 1839 in Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Fayette County, Illinois, Wilberton township. OBITUARY & wife's obituary in Vandalia Leader-Union. TOMBSTONE: Fayette Facts Vol. 6, No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "GUFFEY Uriah Nov 19 1809-Apr 26 1897" The Veterans Administration adds this information "GUFFEY Uriah Black Hawk Capt.; Capt. Boyer 2 Ill Reg d 26 Dec 1897" Note the different death month. WILL, probate & administrator's report. NOTES: He emigrated to Fayette County in 1847. Great-granddaughter Cora PRUETT wrote out a family record in 1982, stating that he was one-quarter Cherokee Indian and fought in the Revolutionary War (she meant the Black Hawk War) drawing a pension. The 1900 Census of Fayette County Illinois shows Uriah's son William R. GUFFEY. It lists Williams' father having been born in Kentucky; right below it lists Fred Guffey (Williams' brother) listing HIS father having been born in Tennessee. Tennessee may have been made from that part of Kentucky when it became a state. Check out Roane County. Other sources state both his parents were from North Carolina. One source says Uriah was listed as Urich, parents Henry and Lydia Guffey. This needs to be checked out. Source says Urich fought in Florida (also known as Seminole) War.

15. Abigail HUDSON was born 20 May 1821 in Tennessee. She died 12 April 1911 in Wilberton tnsp, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried in Nichols Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: 1900 Census of Fayette County, Illinois gives birthdate as May 1820 not 1821. It states both her parents were born in Virginia, that she could not read or write but could speak English. She was running her farm with her two bachelor sons, William R and Fred. It was free of mortgage, and 7 of her eleven children were still alive. FAYETTE FACTS Vol 6. No. 4 page 10 shows tombstone saying "GUFFEY Abigale wife U. b___20, 1821" FAYETTE FACTS XV No. 1 page 22 "Confidence News" states that Granny Guffey was very ill with cancer of the face, Vandalia Union dated March 2 1911. Also obituary from Vandalia newspaper and a family record written in 1982 by her great grand-daughter Cora PRUETT. It states that she was one-half Cherokee Indian. NOTES: Other sources say she died 7 April. Others record her father being from South Carolina and her mother from Alabama. Obituary of April 20 1911 states she had 44 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren at that time.

24. Andrew Pruett or PREWITT was born about 1780 in North Carolina. He died before 1840 in Morgan County, Tennessee. Andrew married Mary _____ about 1805 in Tennessee. SOURCES: Fayette County Illinois FACTS, Volume XVII No. 2 pages 15-20. Shown as a chain carrier for the 4th Surveyors District of Tennessee in 1808. In 1830 Census of Morgan County, Tennessee.

25. Mary _________ was born between 1780 and 1790. She died after 1856 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: Fayette Facts, Volume XVII no. 2, page 15 PRUETT FAMILY

To read this genealogical register of descendants, look at this example:

+ 10 M ix. Berrey Guffey was born 27 February 1860 and died 9 November 1935.

The plus sign (+) means he has descendants, so you will find him and his own family of children later too, with even more info about him listed there, just look for the 10 again later in the list. Then you see his own "ID number (10)" then whether or not he is "male (M) or female (F) (U=unknown gender)" and then the Roman numeral means "which number child he is, within his siblings." He is the 9th child born in that family. i=1    ii=2       iii=3      iv=4       v=5      vi=6     vii=7      viii=8   ix=9   x=10   xi=11 and so on. She died 9 May 1929 in Whitehall, Green County, Illinois and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214, family #137 shows "WHITEHEAD Mary, 14, female, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County, Illinois shows "BUNKHARD, Mary, 22, step- daughter, born Illinois, father born Ill., mother born England." This might not be the same girl. TOMBSTONE says "Mary E. WHITEHEAD TEETS October 26 1855--May 9 1929" Poem on stone. Her obituary from Shirley Morton.  Mary married (1) William D. MCHATTON on 1898 in Union Center. William died 1922. Killed by lightning.  Mary also married (2) William "Will" TEETS on 1905 in Mattoon, Illinois.

5 F iv. Sarah Alice WHITEHEAD was born 1858 in Jersey County, Illinois. She died 1883/1929. SOURCE: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page #214, family #137 shows "WHITEHEAD, Alice, 12, female, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County, Illinois Lone Grove page 12 shows "WHITEHEAD, Sarah, 20, step-daughter, born Ill., father born Ill., mother born England." FAYETTE COUNTY MARRIAGES 1878-1897 shows Sarah Alice Whitehead, 25, born Jersey County, Illinois (parents Henry Whitehead & Emma Wyett) m. 21 June 1883 in Lone Grove. L. A115 Witnesses were Charles Rush, (her sister Malissa's husband) and William T. Cates. DEATH: NOT listed as surviving sister Mary Teets in 1929. Participated in lawsuit filed in 1924 over her brother Cornelius' estate, listed as "Alice" CATES.   Sarah married (1) Charles C. CATES on 21 June 1883 in Lone Grove township, Fayette County, Illinois. Charles was born 1859 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: his wife's wedding license. 7 M vi. Cornelius "Neal" D. WHITEHEAD was born 10 February 1864 in near Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. He died 25 July 1924 in Otego Township, Fayette County, Illinois and was buried 27 July 1924 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCE: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214 family # 137 shows "WHITEHEAD Cornelius, 7, male, at home, father foreign birth" Living with step-father of foreign birth, real father born Illinois. 1880 Census of Fayette County Illinois Lone Grove page 12 shows "WHITEHEAD Cornelius, 17, step-son, born Ill., father born Ill., mother born Eng." 1900 Census of Shelby County, Illinois, Ash Grove township, Vol. 147, sheet 11, line 56 shows "Cornelius W. WHITEHEAD, white, married, born February 1864, age 36, born Ill" His half-brother Harrison R. THOMPSON, (born September 1876 in Ill. ) age 23, is living with him. (Their mother had died in 1888. ) LAWSUIT filed on 20 Nov 1924 by several family members against James W. Whitehead and Mary Whitehead over this man's estate. Notice of publication in Vandalia Newspaper from Matheny & Welker, Attorneys. Fayette Co. Circuit Court, February term 1925. Includes mention of Mary Teets, Melissa Rush, Ella Bradshaw, Anna Shull, Thomas Thompson, LaFayette Thompson, Harry Thompson, Edward Whitehead, Anna Vinyard, Fred Whitehead, William Whitehead, Ralph Whitehead, Anna Wyatt, some Cardwells and many more. FAMILY STORY says his wife may have poisoned him to death. Hester died before him, so this was a second wife. A Mary Whitehead was involved in the lawsuit, and a few months later, a 28 years old Mrs. Mary Whitehead of Otego married a man named Harry Lemons, age 41. His second marriage was only four years old. NOT listed as surviving James in his obituary of 1938.  Cornelius married (1) Hester Anna WOODBURN before 1900. Hester was born 24 February 1868 in Cumberland County, Illinois. She died 2 August 1916. SOURCES: 1900 Census of Shelby County, Illinois, Ash Grove township Vol. 147, sheet 11, line 56 shows "Hester A. born February 1868, age 32, born Ill" OBITUARY Fayette Facts Vol. 20 No. 3 page 56 shows birthdate, deathdate, burial place. Parent's names and who survived. Had been an invalid for 7 years following a stroke. Cornelius married (2) Mary.

8 F vii. Malissa Jane WHITEHEAD was born 1866 in Green County, Illinois. She died after 1938. SOURCES: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township stamped page 214 family #137 shows "WHITEHEAD, Melissa, 4, female, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County, Illinois shows "WHITEHEAD, Melissa, 14, daughter, born Ill, father born Ill, mother born Eng." Listed as surviving her brother James in his obituary in 1938. "Mrs. Chas. RUSH of Salem" (Marion County) BIRTHPLACE: wedding license as below. MARRIAGE: Illinois Fayette County Marriages 1878-1897 Volume 2, page 310 Participated in lawsuit over brother Cornelius' estate in 1924. Listed in sister Mary Teets' obituary as living in Kinmundy, Illinois.   Malissa married (1) Charles M. RUSH on 24 January 1884 in G. Harpster home, Justice of Peace. Charles was born 1860 in Fayette County, Illinois. SOURCES: wedding license. (see brides' notes) married by George HARPSTER J of P at his residence; witnessed by Charles E. CATES and George D. RUSH. License lists J. C. THOMPSON giving consent as father of the bride, but really he was the step-father.

6. Ellen Rebecca WHITEHEAD was born 10 January 1860 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. She died 7 January 1937 in Goodland, Kansas and was buried in Clarmont Cemetery, Stratton, Colorado. SOURCE: 1870 Census of Logan County, Illinois, Oran township, stamped page #214, family #137 shows "WHITEHEAD, Ellen, 10, female, at home, born Ill, father of foreign birth" living with a step-father of foreign birth. 1880 Census of Fayette County==does not appear with family. Perhaps married. NOT listed as surviving brother James in his obituary 1938. Ellen Bradshaw is listed as participating in a lawsuit over the estate of Cornelius Whitehead. Three of his sisters are listed before Ellen, and several brothers after that name. Most information from Shirley Morton of Wichita Kansas. Ellen married (1) Albert BRADSHAW. Albert was born 24 January 1857 in Whitehall, Green County, Illinois. He died 7 September 1917 in Stratton, Kit Carson County, Colorado. SOURCES: Shirley Morton NOTES: lived in Stratton, Colorado.

+ 12 F iii. Althea Mae BRADSHAW was born 11 March 1880 and died 8 September 1938 or 1939.

13 M iv. Clarence Eugene BRADSHAW was born 8 March 1882 in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. He died 4 May 1917 in Stratton, Colorado. SOURCES: mother's obituary, Shirley Morton family group chart. Clarence married (1) Nellie Belle EMERY on 30 September 1906 in Stratton, Colorado.

14 M v. Henry Montgomery BRADSHAW was born 13 May 1884 in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. He died 18 January 1960 in LaGrande, Oregon. SOURCES: Mother's obituary Henry married (1) Effie Josephine WILSON on December 1907 in LaGrande, Oregon.

15 M vi. Charles Albert BRADSHAW was born 27 August 1886 in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. He died 22 July 1978 in Springdale, Arkansas. SOURCES: mother's obituary, "of Springdale, Ark." Listed as survivor in sister Ellen's obituary in 1971. Also survived his wife. Charles married (1) Alta Pearl DAVIS on 3 April 1910 in Stratton, Colorado. OBITUARY from Vandalia Union Feb. 3 1938. MARRIAGE: Marriage License from Illinois Fayette County Marriages 1878-1897 Vol 2 page 383, married in Wheatland township by J.S. PIPPIN, J of P, witnessed by John CONRAD and T. C. PIPPIN. NOTES: Obituary states father died two months before his birth; he came to Fayette County with his mother and family at age 11. He witnessed the marriage of Richard Gatewood's & Elsie Guffey's son Charles. His wife Dora was the cousin of Charles. Vandalia Union, Confidence news states in January 18, 1912 edition "James Whitehead spent Sunday with Amos Ballard". February 1 1912 edition says he "threshed his cowpeas on Sunday". James married (1) Dora Isabell "Ida" PRUETT, daughter of David Elisha PRUETT and Aley GUFFEY on 18 January 1891 in Fayette County, Illinois. Dora was born 2 September 1872 in Lone Grove township, Fayette, Illinois. She died 16 January 1953 in Centralia, Marion, Illinois.
